1. Review of Norms & Purpose: "As a Learning Team we share and learn in order to Lead"
Sharing Ideas
Alice - 5th Gr. Book Club - Chasing Vermer - Alice printed one of the pages and the kids figured out the code - Scholastic website has Pentomino codes: http://www.scholastic.com/blueballiett/games
Becky - Dewey Decimal site - http://users.ece.utexas.edu/~valmstrum/s2s/utopia/library4/src/library4.html
Linda - Kids are taping their news stories with FLIP cams. It's nice to give them a camera and do their own thing - they are more animated and not afraid like they were when using a larger video camera. Linda sent a camera home to tape a book talk in his home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuRuwR2JSXI
Jenn - shared her fractured fairy tale lesson
Laurie - web sites - http://www.informationliteracy.org/ http://www.quia.com/
Sharon -Crossword puzzle maker - http://www.puzzle-maker.com/cw
Word search maker - http://www.puzzle-maker.com/WS/index.htm
Jim - Cropping pictures in Word and Outlook email--
Discussion: Windows - Go to View - Toolbars - choose picture - you will see a toolbar can use it to crop images.
Macs - show your toolbars - you should see a picture tool area - when you insert a picture - you may choose the cropping tool
2. Fall Conference Professional Development Applications http://www.aasl11.org/
Discussion: I'm not sure if everyone got the word that the district staff development committee will not fund this type of request. We are advised to request funding from each of building committees.
Action Item:
3. Social Studies Resources
Discussion: We were asked by Amy Swenson to brainstorm some resources for social studies. Please bring ideas so Beth can take them to the social studies group.
Becky - History of the Nile DVD, Video Series Countries Around the World - Schlessinger Media. Deb states that the standards are being moved to different grade levels according to the documents provided - so we need to wait and see how the standards are aligned.
Action: We will continue to research and add ideas, but for now we will wait until Beth updates us on what the standards and benchmarks will be when decided by the State.
4. Dave Zukor - classroom libraries - checkout system. Grade levels are asking for a system to checkout books - Delicious Library website. The group voted and it was decided that the requesting grade level group will be able to purchase the software for their building.
5.Technology Updates
A. Computer Replacement
Levy monies go to replacement - won't cover everything but it is better. About $900,000 per year is spent on replacement, some groups were not included, some Admin etc. need to be replaced. Student computers - 2005 - 2006 will be replaced. More will not be an option - already over budget. We are trying to roll macs back into media centers. HS more PC's some Macs. Middle schools will be mostly PC's. Elementary will be Macs. Circulation machines - not sure at this point, we may be able to use some older machine - reposition that hardware for the circulation.
I don't have a mac to model from now because I made the decision (get a PC)based on the system that was in the media center at the time.
B. eReaders Kindle v Nook
The district has supported Kindles not Nooks - there is a process to request new hardware. The technology office has to know what is coming into the district so they are able to support the devices. Nooks have not been supported nor will they be until someone makes a formal request. The procedure is that we need to communicate with our buildings and it is our responsibility to relay the message to principals, PTA's etc so they know there is a formal process before they give funds or purchase items for your buildings.
There is a list of approved items from the tech office - your tech para's have the list - these items are supported. If you want something other than what is on the list, the request needs to go through the process. Please fill out the hardware/software request form on the staff intranet to request new items.
Support - means items approved need to go through a testing process so the tech office can test and the product can be utilized with all its intended features.
C. Turning Tech
We will be purchasing SRDs for each student 3-12 and a receiver for each teacher. It is a huge project and varying departments have a stake in this project. Sharing information across grade levels with these documents would be helpful. Each device has a unique ID - how do we assign to the student ID? One of the logistics issues being discussed is the fact that specialists do need to be able to use the clickers and how will class lists work?
D. Website - Andrew Hagen is the new webmaster. We have the new website up and it is functional today. Andrew starts next week and will begin working on the new web interface. Look for more information on this coming in the next month.
E. Sub System - We will be getting a new sub system - implementation is scheduled for April. Smart Find Express will go away over spring break. ASOP will be implemented. Will stored absences by forwarded to the new system. Admin training is next week - the plan is to print the report and hand enter from the reports in teh old system. Once we transition check for jobs entered before the transition.
DRAFT - - we are looking at moving to a new professional development software. My Learning Plan - links with the ASOP system to connect PD with sub system etc.
F. Destiny Auto Upload - Jen has the export from Skyward about 80% complete - she still needs to work with Bob on the process piece. Jen will keep us updated and let us know when we are ready for testing.
6. Program Review
Discussion: A resource position is posted to facilitate the review process. The document shared would be facilitated by the resource person. Regardless of what is being reviewed. What are the key things we want to include - included on the draft. The entire group may be included on the committee or there may be representation by certain levels for certain topics. Monitoring implementation is included - we need to follow through with decisions that are made.
The position is not elementary only.
Questions were asked mostly regarding the job.
Action: Apply for the resource position.
